Summer is a time of rest and rejuvenation that reminds us to slow down so that we can truly experience our lives. In fact, this is how our brains are designed to do best: taking it slow. Countless studies have shown that learning just a little bit at spaced-out intervals, with time to rest in between learning sessions, provides us with a much deeper and more secure understanding than the cramming and quick memorization that we all know from our school days. In a world that seems to increase its pace daily, we’re working against ourselves when we rush to achieve perfection and forget to savor the process of learning.
As you read through this month’s Edit, we invite you to reflect on how you nourish your mind. Taking a moment to learn something new doesn’t have to be squeezed in as yet another item on your neverending to-do list, or a reward that you can only earn through being productive enough elsewhere. Giving yourself the gift of a little mental nourishment is a simple way you can live your values and incorporate some curiosity, culture, and connection into your everyday.
